Participants will create their own sheets of Washi using Eastern Asian plant fibers such as kozo (paper mulberry) and hemp, materials that have been used for centuries in Japan for books, calligraphy, architecture, and everyday life. Washi is prized for its exceptional strength, beauty, and versatility, and continues to play an important role in both traditional and contemporary Japanese arts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe workshop begins with an introduction to the history of Washi and the differences between Eastern and Western papermaking traditions, exploring how the intended use of paper influenced the fibers, tools, and techniques used in each culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParticipants will learn how to form sheets of handmade paper, experiment with decorative inclusions such as dried flowers and natural plant materials, and create embossed textures. During the workshop, papers will be dried using heated drying plates so they are ready to take home the same day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo finish the experience, participants will assemble their handmade papers into their own Washi sample book using two book rings. They will also create sturdy handmade covers by layering multiple sheets of Washi, resulting in a personalized collection that can continue to grow as they make more paper in the future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll materials are provided.
