Instructor: Jason Watts
Nature is filled with patterns—from the repetition of leaves and grasses to the silhouettes of trees, reflections on water, and the shapes created where land, sky, and water meet. In this painting class, artist Jason Watts will guide students in looking beyond the literal landscape to discover the shapes, patterns, and visual rhythms found within nature. Using photographs and observation as a starting point, students will learn to simplify natural forms, develop silhouettes and repeating shapes, and use bold, unexpected color to create a more personal and expressive composition.
Working with water-mixable oils, we’ll explore base painting, color blocking, layering, and glazing techniques while considering how pattern can create movement, depth, and atmosphere.
Rather than simply reproducing what we see, the goal will be to break nature apart and put it back together—finding the balance between landscape, pattern, and abstraction.
Supplies included.
