Book/Catalog: McCormick House Book
$25
The Elmhurst Art Museum is proud to release the first official catalog about the McCormick House, published on the occasion of recent carport restorations and exhibitions dedicated to the designs of Mies van der Rohe.
The 36-page soft cover catalog contains new scholarship on the McCormick House as well as little-known prefab designs proposed by Mies for the western Chicagoland suburbs. An extensive 4,000 word essay was written by Barry Bergdoll, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University, who also curated "Mies's McCormick House Revealed: New Views" at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Bergdoll is also a curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where from 2007 to 2013 he served as Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design. He organized exhibitions such as "Mies in Berlin" (2001-03), "Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling" (2008), “Bauhaus 1919–1933: Workshops for Modernity” with Leah Dickerman (2009-10), and "Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive” (2017).
The catalog was designed by Jason Pickleman, the JNL graphic design, Chicago.
The McCormick House (1952), one of three single-family homes built by Mies in the U.S., is the cornerstone of the museum's collection. It is a rare and important example of Mies van der Rohe's mature style, incorporating elements of his celebrated designs for the Farnsworth (1951) and 860-880 Lake Shore Drive (1951).
